Fleeting Solidarity is een performative installatie van Guy Königstein (1982, Ramat-Gan, Israël).
Dit nieuwe werk is zowel een ruimte voor creatie en presentatie als voor conversatie waarin Guy de notie van solidariteit in relatie tot de ander centraal stelt. Door afgemeten hoeveelheden was (parafine) te smelten en in bewerkte kartonnen mallen te gieten maakte Guy een serie kleurrijke plakkaten. Ze tonen verschillende grafische uitdrukkingsvormen van solidariteit die veelal worden gebruikt op social-media en, mede dankzij de vierkante vorm, ook als zodanig herkenbaar zijn.
Gedurende een week werkte Königstein in de entreehal van de Erasmustoren op de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen. De universiteit is in zekere zin een opzichzelfstaande maatschappij binnen de stad waar een groot en divers publiek samenkomt. Guy ging in gesprek met medewerkers en studenten over de notie van solidariteit en maakte naar aanleiding daarvan nieuwe grafische symbolen voor nieuwe wassen plakkaten.
Door het proces te doorlopen van vormgeven, smelten, ontmallen en presenteren, maakt Königstein van een vluchtig beeld dat online circuleert, een uniek materieel object. Elke nieuwe plakkaat werd tijdelijk "gepost" (uitgelicht) op een, eveneens door Guy ontworpen, presentatiemeubel, en vervolgens opgeslagen in het "archief" d.w.z. een toegankelijk stellage-meubel. De was (parafine) weerspiegeld de breekbaarheid en tijdelijkheid van het gebruik van de symbolen op online media. Daarnaast refereert het wassen materiaal aan kaarsen die veelal worden gebruikt bij herdenkingsrituelen en de textuur en robuustheid van de plakkaten doen denken aan herdenkingsstenen die in kerken en bij monumenten zijn gemonteerd in vloeren en wanden.
Er werd een event georganiseerd, een samenkomst & performance rondom Fleeting Solidarity. Geïnteresseerden en genodigden - niet persé verbonden aan de universiteit - kregen de kans om de installatie van Guy Königstein in werking te zien. Er was de mogelijkheid om vragen te stellen over het maakproces, over het onderwerp solidariteit in gesprek te gaan en ook deel te nemen aan het proces. Voor de gelegenheid had Guy als verassing een plakkaat voorbereid met daarop het logo van Derde Wal dat gezamenlijk uit de mal werd gehaald. Samen met Guy maakten de deelnemers ook een nieuw - en tevens het laatste - plakkaat. Na deze bijeenkomst werd het resultaat van het project een week lang gepresenteerd in de Refter van de Radboud Universiteit in Nijmegen.

Fleeting Solidarity is a performative installation by Guy Königstein (1982, Ramat-Gan, Israel).
This new work is a space for creation and presentation as well as for conversation in which Guy focuses on the notion of solidarity in relation to the other. By melting measured amounts of wax (paraffin) and pouring it into processed cardboard moulds, Guy made a series of colorful placards. They show various graphic expressions of solidarity that are often used on social media and, partly thanks to the square shape, are also recognizable as such.
For a week, Königstein worked in the entrance hall of the Erasmustorenat the Radboud University Nijmegen. In a sense, the university is a self-contained society within the city where a large and diverse audience comes together. Guy talked to staff and students about the notion of solidarity and, as a result, created new graphic symbols for new wax placards.
By going through the process of shaping, melting, demoulding and presenting, Königstein turns a fleeting image that circulates online into a unique material object. Each new placard was temporarily "posted" (highlighted) on a display piece, also designed by Guy, and then stored in the "archive", i.e. an accessible scaffolding piece of furniture. The wax (paraffin) reflects the fragility and transience of using the symbols on online media. In addition, the wax material refers to candles that are often used in memorial rituals and the texture and robustness of the placards are reminiscent of memorial stones mounted in floors and walls in churches and monuments.
An event was organised, a meeting & performance around Fleeting Solidarity. Interested parties and invited guests - not necessarily associated with the university - were given the opportunity to see Guy Königstein's installation in action. There was the opportunity to ask questions about the creative process, to discuss the topic of solidarity and also to participate in the process. As a surprise, Guy had prepared a placard for the occasion with the Derde Wal logo on it, which was taken out of the mold together. Together with Guy, the participants also made a new - and also the last - placard. After this meeting, the result of the project was presented for a week in the 'Refter' of the Radboud University in Nijmegen.
