Thijs gebruikt (ambachtelijke) technieken uit de filmwereld om werk te maken wat ingaat op zijn cinematografische fascinaties. Het werkproces is zowel de oorsprong als
de bestaansreden van het werk zelf. Voor Social Aspects 2021 stapt hij buiten deze zelfreflectieve studiopraktijk en maakt hij de stap richting performance. Een nieuw
publiek terrein waar hij de realiteit hoopt te beïnvloeden met filmtechnieken en zijn eigen aanwezigheid. Voor zijn ACT werkte hij samen met Dakota Havard aan een open podium voor perfmance, muziek en ongeregeldheden. Voor zijn eindpresentatie tijdens Social Aspecs 2021 zal hij een sculptuur in de lucht vervaardigen, een ingreep in de publieke ruimte hoog boven onze hoofden.
Ik heb een fascinatie voor cinematografie en met name de technieken rondom de visuele en special effects. Denk hierbij aan technieken zoals blue screens, miniaturen, muziek, licht of het 3D inscannen van personen. Maar het gaat verder: eigenlijk elk stukje ambacht en techniek dat samenhangt met film inspireert mij. Door deze in te zetten eigen ik datgene wat mij fascineert en inspireert toe. Het maakproces van een werk is voor mij die indrukken verzamelen, ordenen en laten wecken. Dit proces zorgt soms voor een snelkookpan maar resulteert regelmatig in werken die zich over de jaren heen vormen. Het is niet altijd duidelijk wanneer een weckpot omslaat in iets concreets. Soms valt het kwartje pas na een tijdje, en wordt pas duidelijk waar een werk precies om draait nadat het al gerealiseerd is.
Thijs uses labor-intensive cinematic techniques to create works that concern his fascination with the world of cinema. The process is both the origin and the raison d'être of the work itself. For Social Aspects he steps outside the boundaries of this reflective studio practice to try performance for the very first time. A new discipline that he hopes to relate to the public domain. Here, he will try to influence reality through his presence augmented by cinematic techniques. For his ACT he collaborated with Dakota Havard to create a stage and open mic session for performances, music and general mayhem. For his final presentation during Social Aspects 2021 he will create a sculpture in the sky, an intervention in the immense public space located above our heads.
I am fascinated with cinematography, more particularly the techniques used in visual and special effects. Blue screens, miniatures, music, lighting and motion scanning are all examples of new crafts that I would like to incorporate in my practice. But my interest goes beyond these specific techniques and covers most creative acts associated with film. By employing these skills I take ownership of the thing that never fails to capture my interest. My process consists out of gathering impressions, structuring information and then letting the whole sit and simmer until a work takes shape. This might happen in an instant or it might take years. I like to think this method gives me the luxury of time, of allowing myself to revisit older projects that might make sense now. I often find meaning in my own work long after I've finished producing it.
